U.S. Open 2010

The semi-finals of the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York will feature some familiar faces when play resumes on Saturday afternoon. Number 1 seeded Rafael Nadal earned a birth in the semis with a victory in straight sets over fellow countryman Fernando Verdasco. Nadal appeared to be on top of his game with the easy victory but surprisingly may not be favored to win the tournament. Nadal must now face Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the semi-final round that has plagued him throughout his U.S. Open career. Rafael Nadal has lost in the semis the last two years and has failed to ever take the U.S. Open title, the only major tournament that he has yet to win. If Nadal manages to make it past the semis, he will have to face an even greater test before he can claim his career grand slam. On the other side of the bracket sits none other than Roger Federer who is looking to add to his already illustrious trophy collection and No. 3 seeded Novak Djokovic who is always in title contention.As...

NCAA and NFL Football Back and Better Then Ever

Football fans rejoice, the NFL season kicks off tomorrow night as the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints take on Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings in a rematch of last years NFC championship. As entertaining as that match up sounds, it is but a prelude to what this weekend has in store for football fanatics. This weekend’s college football lineup is possibly the most anticipated of the year as many high profile programs duel it out. If Mondays Boise State-Virginia Tech game was a preview to things to come, then we are in store for quite the weekend. Boise State jumped out to an early 17-point lead only to see it slip away by halftime. Kellen Moore led the Broncos to a victory with a 4th quarter drive that capped a performance that will surely place him as a perspective Heisman candidate.  With a victory Boise State looks to once again be on their way to a terrific season and probable BCS birth. Games on Saturday with heavy BCS implications will include...

The Little League World Series Should Take a Cue from the Strasburg Injury

Washington Nationals rookie right-hander Stephen Strasburg has a significant tear in his ulnar collateral ligament that probably will require reconstructive Tommy John elbow surgery, the Nationals announced Friday.  This is a big blow to the development of the phenom pitcher. You can't blame the Nationals for this one, they have been very cautious with Strasburg since he was drafted.  They had a very well crafted plan to limit his pitches each game and even had a total pitch count for him for the year.  Once Strasburg hit that pitch count for the year they were going to shut him down no matter what.  They were willing to do that even if they were in a penant race, however anyone that knows anything about baseball knew the Nationals were a long shot at best to be in a penant race!  I blame this one on the wear and tear on Strasburg's arm from the past.Strasburg is a power pitcher with a devastating breaking ball.  He has been throwing with such...

Brett Favre and the NFL Regular Season Return September 9th

As many expected, Brett Favre has returned to the Minnesota Vikings and the NFL for an amazing 20th season. The Viking organization could apparently no longer wait for Favre to make his decision, so they sent several of Bretts closest friends on the team down to his home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to get an answer. Less than 24 hours later Brett Favre was on a private plane back to Minnesota. According to ESPN, the players sent to Hattiesburg to retrieve Favre, including defensive end Jarred Allen and kicker Ryan Longwell didn’t speak of wins and losses but how much fun the year could be. Apparently that’s all they needed to say because Favre was back taking snaps at Viking practice on Wednesday for the first time since their loss to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Saints in the playoffs last season. The forty-year-old Farve will have exceedingly high expectations for this season after last year was considered to be possibly his best year in the league. The Minnesota...

Martin Kaymer Wins PGA Championship In A Playoff

Martin Kaymer became only the second German to ever win a Major Championship on Sunday when he defeated Bubba Watson in a playoff at Whistling Straights golf course in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The three-hole playoff was decided on the third hole when Bubba Watson hit a stray shot into a water hazard, allowing Kaymer to safely put his way to victory. All of this came after a wild 18th hole, where Dustin Johnson had a put to win the championship but instead found himself dropping all the way down to a fifth place finish. After paring the final hole to force a three-way playoff, Johnson was immediately approached by a rules official who claimed that there was a problem. Johnson had apparently grounded his club in a bunker before his second shot. This notion was reinforced by CBS video coverage that clearly showed Johnson ground his club. Dustin Johnson was then forced to change his score and take a two shot penalty for the discretion, eliminating him from the playoff. The real controversy...

Brazil Showcases Young Talent In 2-0 Victory Over USA

The United States soccer team returned to action for the first time since the World Cup on Tuesday night when they took on a fresh faced Brazilian squad in an exhibition match. The game nearly sold out the New Meadowlands Stadium with a crowd of over 77,000 who came out to see the likes of Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley take on the worlds best. The Brazil team had a few recognizable names such as Robinho and AC Milan forward Alexander Pato who scored to put his team into a comfortable 2-0 lead but for the most part, it was a Brazil team chalk full of young talent. Brazils first goal was scored by 18-year-old Neymar, who put a nifty header into the back of the net from several yards out. Neymar looked impressive in his national team debut and will be one to watch as the squad prepares for the 2014 World Cup. Brazil will without a doubt be favorites to win the 2014 World Cup as the host nation. From the looks of the exhibition squad they used on Tuesday night, Brazil will be...

Tiger Woods Has Career Worst Tournament Entering Final Major of the Year

Professional golfer Bobby Jones once said, “Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course - the distance between your ears.” The truth behind this quote was illustrated to perfection this weekend by the mediocre performance provided by Tiger Woods at the Bridgestone Invitational. At a course where Tiger Woods has won seven previous times, he posted a final round 77 and finished the tournament at a whopping 18 over par, good enough for 78th place out of 80 golfers. This tournament marks the worst finish in Woods career and once again proves how mental the game of golf truly is. Tiger simply has not been the same since his highly publicized family problems first made headlines last thanksgiving. The steadfast focus and determination to win which Woods made famous was nowhere to be seen this weekend when he looked defeated throughout. The only shred of good news that Tiger can take from the tournament is that he will maintain his world number one ranking, for now at...

Will Brett Favre Play in 2010?

The soap opera that Brett Favres career has become took another turn for the extraordinary this week when reports surfaced that Favre had sent text messages to Viking teammates informing them that he would in fact be retiring. As an avid Chicago Bears fan I couldn’t help but enjoy watching the looks on my friends faces (Viking fans) as they realized that Tavaris Jackson was once again their starting quarterback. I continued to watch the coverage of Favres impending retirement and the ESPN analysts debate over Favres place among the all-time greats when news leaked that Favre may not be ready to hang up the pads just yet.Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell was one of the first to dispel rumors of Favres retirement when the long time friend acknowledged that he had talked to Brett on Tuesday and that he failed to mention anything about retirement. Sources say that Favres decision is dependant upon his health and most importantly the status of his surgically repaired ankle that is...
