Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Will Boxing Bank or Bust?

Boxing has gradually become an afterthought in the American sports landscape over the past decade and for good reason.  Gone are the days of big name heavyweights going punch for punch in classic matches that earn themselves nicknames such as Foreman and Ali’s Rumble in the Jungle or Ali and Frazier’s Thrilla in Manila. People now look to the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) for entertainment, a sport that has quickly risen to popularity in boxings absence.

However, the sport of boxing may not be down for the count just yet. There are two big names left who have yet to fight in what would surely be a classic match, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. The fight is starting to look like it will never happen which I consider a huge disappointment because Floyd and Manny are pound for pound the greatest fighters we have at the moment. The first set date for the fight, which was scheduled for several months ago, was canceled due to the fact that Mayweather called for extra performance enhancing drug testing that a superstitious Pacquiao did not agree with. Pacquiao finally agreed to the terms only to find that now Mayweather wont agree to the fight. The obvious assumption that can be made from looking at the facts is simply that Mayweather is scared to put his 41-0 record on the line.

If things continue down this path and this fight does indeed never happen, then in my opinion, it is a disgrace to the sport. I can’t imagine fighters such as Ali, Frazier, Foreman, or even Tyson being AFRAID to fight the best competition while in their prime. Floyd “money” Mayweather may also have to lose the nickname because he would likely be leaving millions of dollars on the table by not accepting what would be the biggest fight in years. This soap opera of a scenario will likely go on for some time but as a fan, I hope for the sport of boxings sake that the fight will happen in the not so distant future.
