Tiger Sets His Sights On St. Andrews

Tiger Woods finished with a disappointing final round of 71 on Sunday at the AT&T National in Pennsylvania, leaving him at +4 for the tournament and 46th place overall. The tournament marked the first time in eleven years that Woods finished a PGA event without breaking par in a single round. Woods was reportedly quite pleased with the way he struck the ball throughout the tournament and was quoted as saying "I just need to get my putter organized a little better and really work on my putter over there.” Of course “over there” is a reference to St. Andrews Golf Course, home to this years British Open and Tigers next test.  Woods has won the last two British Opens held at St. Andrews in rather comfortable fashion, something that may provide him with much needed boost in confidence.

It seems strange to say that Tiger Woods, arguably the best golfer of all time, would need a “boost in confidence” but his hiatus from the game sparked by his highly publicized marital troubles has obviously affected his play. I don’t think that anyone questioned the fact that he would be rusty but I like many others expected him to bounce back to his old ways sooner then later. He was in contention at this years U.S. Open but fell apart on Sunday, which was very uncharacteristic for Tiger at a major championship. This weekend he struggled to even make the cut on Friday. Tiger is currently taking part in an Irish charity tournament to tune up his game for the rapidly approaching British Open. Is St. Andrews just what Tiger needs to get back to his winning ways? I for one will be watching when the British Open begins play next Thursday.
