Will Brett Favre Play in 2010?

The soap opera that Brett Favres career has become took another turn for the extraordinary this week when reports surfaced that Favre had sent text messages to Viking teammates informing them that he would in fact be retiring. As an avid Chicago Bears fan I couldn’t help but enjoy watching the looks on my friends faces (Viking fans) as they realized that Tavaris Jackson was once again their starting quarterback. I continued to watch the coverage of Favres impending retirement and the ESPN analysts debate over Favres place among the all-time greats when news leaked that Favre may not be ready to hang up the pads just yet.

Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell was one of the first to dispel rumors of Favres retirement when the long time friend acknowledged that he had talked to Brett on Tuesday and that he failed to mention anything about retirement. Sources say that Favres decision is dependant upon his health and most importantly the status of his surgically repaired ankle that is reportedly still ailing him. Vikings front office has made a move in the wake of the retirement rumors and offered Favre more money (estimated 20 million) for this upcoming season. It is also widely believed that the Vikings will let Favre play whenever he is ready, be that week one or the first round of the playoffs.

As the saga continues, I half expect Brett Favre to follow in the footsteps of Lebron James and have ESPN air an hour long special entitled “The Decision: Brett Favre Edition”. With or without Favre, the Vikings will begin their season on September 9th against the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. Hopefully Brett Favre will have made a decision by that time but I for one will not be holding my breathe.
